UV Phototherapy Lamp Model KN-4003BL is the world’s most advanced handheld UVB phototherapy device that can be used for the treatment of a variety of skin diseases and conditions. This device can be used from the comfort of your own home. With this device, you can target the stem cells at the base of the skin with UV light in the 311-312 nm range.

This device is designed ergonomically and can be used by the person undergoing treatment by him/herself. However, the treatment should be followed only on medical advice by an expert dermatologist.

This device is based on sound and established scientific principles and approved medical treatment for skin conditions by ultraviolet light. It is engineered and manufactured using the best components and designed so that it is completely safe and easy to use. Each person can follow the treatment advice given by the doctor and the device will give the appropriate ultraviolet radiation dose if followed strictly according to the operating instructions provided in the manual.

Before we go into the details of the device and treatment itself let’s look over the science behind all this.

Light is life!

The biggest and the brightest source of light is the sun. Sun emits what we call white light but actually, it is a spectrum of different wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation.

This entire range of electromagnetic (EM) spectrum is divided into many different distinct regions in order of decreasing wavelengths. The names given to these regions are radio waves, microwaves, infrared (IR), visible light, ultraviolet (UV), X-rays, and gamma-rays.

Apart from the visible light we also receive radiation from the sun in the ultraviolet and infra-red regions of the spectrum which is invisible to the human eye.

Ultraviolet light is though not visible directly is responsible for sunburns, tanning of our skins, and making black-light posters glow. Our skin protects us from serious damage to our bodies from ultraviolet light but too much exposure is damaging to living tissue.

Ultraviolet (UV) has wavelengths from about 380 nanometers to about 10 nm. The UV radiation may be divided into 3 regions:

  • UVA, or near UV (315 nm–400 nm)
  • UVB, or middle UV (280 nm–315 nm)
  • UVC, or far UV (180 nm–280 nm)

The human skin

The skin is the largest organ in the human body and it's one of the most complicated. It's ever-changing, and it contains many specialized cells and structures. The skin's surface provides a protective barrier to the body from anything harmful lurking in the environment. It also controls the body temperature, collects sensory information from the surrounding environment, and plays an active role in the immune system to protect the body from disease.

Your skin also feels sensation, communicating with your brain what is going on around you. Your skin, in cooperation with your nervous system, is the primary organ for your sense of touch.

Different layers of skin

The skin has two main layers, the Epidermis and Dermis each of which serves specific purposes. Just under the two layers of the skin there also third layers which consist of fat tissue, which also protects your body and helps you adjust to the outside temperatures. Many medical conditions exist only in certain layers of your skin.

What is Phototherapy?

The term phototherapy is a form of treatment where fluorescent light bulbs are used to treat skin conditions. Natural sunlight is known to be beneficial for some skin disorders. It produces Vitamin D which is vital for us. It is the ultraviolet part of the radiation produced by the sun that is used in phototherapy, in particular the Ultraviolet-A (UVA) and Ultraviolet-B (UVB) range of wavelengths.

Types of phototherapy

The type of phototherapy that may be used is dependent on the type of skin condition, the person’s physical and medical condition, and previous responses to treatment. The type of phototherapy that you should undergo can be recommended by your treating dermatologist.

  1. Broadband UVB in which a skin condition is treated with the full UVB spectrum. Examples of skin conditions treated by BB-UV-B are psoriasis and eczema.
  1. Narrowband UVB in which only a small part of the UVB spectrum is used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. NB-UV-B is considered more effective, especially for severe psoriasis, eczema, polymorphic light eruption. UV Phototherapy Lamp Model KN-4003BL uses the narrowband UVB to treat various skin conditions.

How does phototherapy work?

UV Phototherapy is the use of UV light to treat psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and other skin diseases. UV light can slow the rapid growth of unwanted new skin cells.  This helps treat certain skin diseases, which cause the skin cells to grow too rapidly. After treatment with UV light, most patients have rapid improvement as their cells gradually start to behave normally. This reduces or eliminates the symptoms of the disease altogether. The Ultraviolet light has the ability to reduce inflammation of the skin and which can help in various inflammatory skin diseases.

Why should you choose the narrowband UVB?

Phototherapy can use two ways of treatment, UV broadband, and UV narrow band. The major difference between them is that in the narrowband UVB treatment, only a small band of wavelengths of ultraviolet light is used whereas the broadband may use the full range of UAB.

Several clinical studies done in various countries have demonstrated that the narrow-band UVB clears psoriasis quicker and reduces recurrences than broad-band UVB. More research is being done by scientists on other skin conditions such as eczema and vitiligo. Narrowband UVB consistently shows its effectiveness and efficiency with treatment results. Model KN-4003BL uses narrow-band UVB.

What conditions can be treated with phototherapy?

UVB is used to treat common skin conditions such as:

  • Pityriasis
  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Vitiligo
  • Lichen planus
  • Herpes zoster
  • polymorphic light eruption
  • Generalized itching
  • Cutaneous T cell lymphoma

The skin conditions should be diagnosed by a qualified medical doctor and dermatologist who will prescribe the UVB therapy for the patient. This device should be used without the approval of a qualified medical professional.

What does phototherapy involve?

Ultraviolet phototherapy used to be given only in hospitals because the treatment equipment was expensive. But now by the UV Phototherapy Lamp Model KN-4003BL, you can do the phototherapy sessions yourself in the comfort of your home.

You can plan the treatment schedule as advised by the dermatologist. The treatment schedule varies from two to three times a week and an average course lasts between 15 and 30 treatments. There are no limits to the number of treatments you may have over your lifetime. However, after over 500 UVB treatments means that you will need annual skin checks to evaluate your skin condition by a doctor.

The starting UVB dose is worked out by your demonologist based your age, skin type and the skin disease.

The amount of ultraviolet light dose given to the skin will depend primarily on the condition of your skin; any part of the skin may be exposed to ultraviolet light, except the eyes, and the genital area, which should be protected. If you only have the skin condition on your limbs, your trunk can be covered. Safety goggles provided with the package should always be worn to protect your eyes during treatment.

Contraindications

Following are the contraindications and under these conditions, this device should not be used:

  • Xeroderma pigmentosum
  • Salient photosensitization dermatosis
  • Schematized lupus erythematosus
  • Basal cell nevus syndrome
  • Medicine which suppresses your immune system, such as ciclosporin or methotrexate.
  • If you are taking medicines that make you more sensitive to sunlight
  • During the lactation period
  • Pregnancy

Do you need to avoid anything whilst having phototherapy?

  • Medicines that make you more sensitive to ultraviolet light.
  • Additional sun exposure or the use of sunbeds.
  • Consuming large quantities of citrus fruits, celery, carrots, figs, and parsley should be avoided as these food items make your skin more light-sensitive.
  • Heavily perfumed skin products.
  • Creams, ointments, and lotions on treatment days other than moisturizers.
  • Short haircuts, as they may result in burning of previously covered skin.
  • Do not grow a beard or mustache if you don’t already have one.

What are the potential side effects of phototherapy?

The common, short-term side effects of phototherapy include:

  • Redness and discomfort (sunburn).
  • Dry and itchy skin.
  • Folliculitis an inflammatory condition of the hair roots may occur. This is usually mild, and it does not cause significant discomfort and usually requires no treatment or interruption of UV therapy.
  • A rash may develop while receiving ultraviolet light.
  • Cold sores may occur if you are prone to these.  Please cover the affected area by sunblock when having the treatment.
  • Blisters in areas of psoriasis.
  • Worsening of skin disease.

Potential long-term side effects of phototherapy include:

Although follow-up of patients treated with narrowband UVB has not as yet detected a skin cancer risk, it is possible that with long enough follow up of those who have had many exposures, a risk will be identified. The increased risk is proportional to the total number of treatments and the gross ultraviolet doses delivered. It is also dependent on pre-existing risk factors for skin cancer in patients.

The UV Lamp

The lamp used in the Model KN-4003BL is manufactured by the world-renowned company Philips. The power lamp is 9W. The normal life of the lamp is about 1000 hours. But with the increase of the service time, frequently turning it on and off, or use in high-temperature areas will lead to reduce the lamp intensity and shorten the lamp life.

When the lamp flickers or does not work, you should change the lamp. The lamp in the device can be easily replaced just like changing a home light bulb.

Meanwhile, to ensure the effectiveness of treatment, it is recommended to change new lamps when the service time is up to 350 hours or you observe intensity reduction to less than 50% of the original intensity. This will ensure to maintain the therapeutic effect of your device for a long time.
